Virechana is one of the panchkarms treatments. Virechana is for the pitta oriented diseases. Some of the pitta oriented disease may be skin diseases like psoriasis, eczema, itching, dermatitis, these are the skin oriented diseases. Also diseases where the digestive system plays a major role like the acid peptic diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, constipation. Virechana is also going to be extremely useful in pakshadatha, which is useful in paralysis. Virechana is like operation. So in operation, we age to do some pre procedures. So you have to do some poorva karmas, pradhaan karmas, and pashta karmas. What are poorva karmas? 3 – 4 days before the patient has to be on tulsi juices, chitrakaadi tablets, after 2 – 3 days, they have to do the dhrutapaana that is they have to drink certain ghee. So which type of ghee it depends on the type of virechana. So it depends on why it is done for weight loss, or for a disease like psoriasis. So how much ghee? First we can start from 30 to 60 ml, then the next day they can take 90 ml and 120 ml. So when can you stop taking the ghee. The skin on the hand it becomes shiny, the ghee comes out of the stools. Once the saturation is reached, the ghee should be stopped and after that there is 3 days of oil massages and steam bath, the tablets for virechanas that is the ichabhedis, etc depending upon the patient is given and this is induced purgation. That day the patient will be extremely exhausted. After this the post care is important where the patient has to follow a strict restricted diet, liquid diet, semisolid and soft diet. Virecahan plays a very important role in removing the doshas of the body and nowadays as a preventive measure also people do virechana.
