Can you tell which spot is melanoma? Give me your answer in comments.
Here’s a quick guide on identifying common skin spots:
🌞 **Lentigo**: Often called liver spots or age spots, these are small, flat, brown spots caused by sun exposure. They usually appear on the face, hands, shoulders, and arms. Lentigines are generally harmless but can be a cosmetic concern.
🟤 **Seborrheic Keratosis**: These are waxy, wart-like growths that can appear anywhere on the body. They range in color from light tan to black and have a slightly raised, scaly, or waxy texture. While they are benign and generally don’t require treatment, they can sometimes be mistaken for melanoma.
⚠️ **Melanoma**: A serious form of skin cancer that appears as a new, unusual growth or a change in an existing mole. Melanomas can be life-threatening if not detected early. They may appear as irregularly shaped, multicolored spots with uneven borders.
**ABCDEs of Melanoma:**
– **A**symmetry: One half of the spot doesn’t match the other.
– **B**order: Edges are irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred.
– **C**olor: Multiple colors such as shades of brown, black, tan, red, white, or blue.
– **D**iameter: Spot is larger than 6mm across (about the size of a pencil eraser).
– **E**volving: The spot is changing in size, shape, or color.
👉🏽It’s crucial to get your spots evaluated before treatment, so see a dermatologist. I’ve had several patients this year who came in to laser their sun spot, which I evaluated and determined to be melanoma. We don’t want to laser or EDC melanomas.
