Hi guys, welcome to learning is fun with me and my Jack Russell, Ash. We’re at the letter H today and we will be talking about a condition in dermatology known as Hailey Hailey disease. Hailey Hailey disease is also known as benign familial pemphigus. It is what we consider genodermatoses which means it is predominantly a genetic disorder. This genetic condition affects the calcium transporter gene known as ATP2C1. What you see is actually a rash that affects areas known as the intertriginous areas, such as under the arms, at the groin area, basically where there is skin to skin contact at the flexures.
What happens is essentially that blisters and superficial skin erosions which are a little like ulcers, develop over these areas. It can be quite similar to another condition known as Darier’s disease. This is just an example of the many different conditions that dermatologists treat. Internationally, all dermatologists before their certification have to undergo at least five years of specialty training. And this is why you should always choose a board certified dermatologist.
