Peanut allergies can be severe!!!

Peanut allergies can be severe! It is very common for parents to test of peanuts near and emergency department just in case there is a risk of anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis can be quite severe and always needs medical attention. This can look like a rash/hives that are itchy, belly pain, vomiting, changes in skin color, changes in behaviour, swelling, coughing and difficulty breathing and other symptoms.

Tips to remember when testing out peanuts for the first time. Usually the second exposure is where you might see a bad reaction. Your body has to first generate an immune response and then the next time it happens, that is when you see symptoms. Also remember that it can take between 15 min to 2 hours to see symptoms.

‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️

Peanut, tree nut, sesame, fish, and shellfish allergies tend to be persistent sadly so around 20% of peanut allergy may resolve, usually by age 8 years.

Who is at risk – those who have a personal history or family history of atopy (ie eczema, asthma, oral or other allergies). Breastfeeding can help and even early introduction of allergenic foods can help.
