1 . Ofcourse the first step is to avoid the underlying trigger – licking
Treat underlying medical conditions.

if it is a coping mechanism- identify the underlying triggers , practice mindfulness, meditation, adapt new strategies like chewing gum , and in severe cases, seek therapy.

2. Use a hydrating lip balm containing ingredients like shea butter , bees wax , plant based wax, ceramides for night and a lip balm with spf for the day
Tip: use lip balm repeatedly. Carry it in your bag/ pocket . Put it bedside , in car etc. I haven’t come across a lip balm that give la long lasting hydration . So keep applying at frequent intervals.

3. Seal the moisture with petroleum jelly at night . After applying lip balm , just before bed , seal it with creams like Vaseline.

4. Exfoliate your lips ( very important. But dont pick )regularly using a scrub / tooth brush ( gently)

5. Avoid irritating lip products like harsh cosmetics , keep a check on your tooth paste. Avoid lip balms with colours / fragrances

6. Keep yourself well hydrated

7. Use humidifier in your room if you live in a dry cold place

8. In severe cases ,you might be advised to use an anti-inflammatory cream by your dermatologist along with lip balms and moisturiser & a gentle cleanser for face.
