It’s used as a laxative, but could this oil actually improve your hair growth?
While castor oil is mainly known as a laxative, there is a lot of talk surrounding its ability to improve hair growth.
You might have heard people talk about Castor Oil as a cure-all for hair loss, a hair strengthener, or a dry scalp treatment.
Some claims have even reported that castor oil was able to increase hair growth 5-fold!
Unfortunately, though, there’s no specific scientific research to back up the hair growth claims of this oil.
But with so much interest and anecdotal results, it would be really interesting to see a clinical trial involving castor oil and hair growth.
So what can castor oil actually do?
While we can’t tell you that it’s been proven to increase hair growth, there may be some benefits to treating your hair and scalp with castor oil.
Castor oil does seem to have antibacterial properties.
This means that it could potentially improve the symptoms of bacterial scalp problems such as dermatitis or fungal infections.
One study showed that castor oil was able to inhibit the growth of multiple bacterial strains, suggesting that it has strong antibacterial properties.
Castor oil may also be able to improve scalp and hair health through its anti-inflammatory effects.
Psoriasis is an inflammatory disease that can occur at the scalp.
Any improvement to psoriasis would do a lot to improve hair health, as inflammation can result in reduced hair growth.
One animal study found that ricinoleic acid, the main fatty acid in castor oil, was able to reduce swelling and showed anti-inflammatory activity.
Another study found that castor oil was able to increase the luster and shine of hair by increasing light reflection.
But does castor oil have any side effects?
As castor oil is used on hair topically, one real side effect risk would come from an allergic reaction.
So while castor oil hasn’t yet been completely proven to increase hair growth, it does seem to be a safe topical treatment with a number of therapeutic properties!
