Chronic itching, that will not go away is common in people with advanced chronic kidney disease. I’m not talking about some hand itching or the itching that occurs after a bug bite. This is itching all over that you just can’t get rid of.
Why does that happen? When your kidneys aren’t filtering your blood properly, waste products can accumulate and cause itching that just won’t go away. While itching can have many causes—like dry skin or allergies—if it’s persistent, it’s worth considering whether your kidneys might be the issue.
Usually kidney disease doesn’t cause itching until it is advanced and the best news about this is that with a simple blood test for creatinine and eGFR, your doctor can rule out the kidneys as a possible cause for your itching. This also goes for people who have chronic kidney disease and are followed by their doctor regularly. If that’s you and you develop new itching, your doctor may order a blood test to see if your kidney function has declined.
