Foods that play a role in triggering / worsening dandruff are :

1. The foods that can can contribute to inflammation in the body like:

– High-sugar foods: like sugary drinks, sweets, chocolates etc
– Processed foods: often high in salt, preservatives, and other additives cause inflammation
– Fatty and fried foods: Foods that are high in saturated and trans fats, such as fried foods

2. Dairy products: Many of my patients also agree that consuming dairy products worsens their dandruff symptoms. This is due to the hormones present in dairy products, which can affect the skin’s oil production and also cause inflammation

3. Alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to dehydration, which can dry out the skin and exacerbate dandruff symptoms.

Foods to include :

1. Omega-3 fatty acids : have anti-inflammatory properties. Good sources -fatty fish (such as salmon), walnuts, flaxseed, and chia seeds.

2. Zinc-rich foods: an important mineral that is involved in many bodily functions, including the maintenance of healthy skin. Good sources of zinc include oysters, beef, chicken, pumpkin seeds, and cashews.

3. B vitamin-rich foods: B vitamins, especially biotin and niacin, play a role in maintaining healthy skin. Good sources include whole grains, meat, fish, and leafy greens.

4. Antioxidant-rich foods: protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals. Good sources include berries, dark chocolate, green tea, and leafy greens.

5. Water: Staying hydrated can help to keep the skin and scalp moisturized, which may reduce flakiness and itching associated with dandruff.

6. Probiotic-rich foods: are beneficial bacteria that can help to promote a healthy balance of microorganisms in the gut and on the skin. Good sources of probiotics include yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, and other fermented foods.
