Seborrheic dermatitis or cradle cap is an inflammatory condition that can occur mainly in areas of the body that have many oil-producing glands, for instance, on the scalp. This is a common condition in babies and can go on until the baby is a few years old. It is hypothesised that it is because of an inflammatory reaction of the skin to a yeast that is present on the skin surface. You are not actually sure about what the cause of this condition is. Infants typically present with greasiness, redness, and patches on the scalp, which are usually associated with scaling, and some flaking would be present on the scalp. The condition is usually self-limiting; it gets better over a few weeks, months or a time, it may take a few years for it to resolve. It can cause some amount of discomfort for the infant because of the itching, and the child would need a very mild supportive treatment to help out with this condition. So, in mild cases, usually shampooing the hair every day with a non-medicated shampoo would help, and after shampooing, you could remove the flakes with a soft brush or with a toothbrush. Sometimes the flakes are very adherent, and to loosen the flakes, you could soak the flakes overnight with an emollient like white petroleum jelly, mineral oil or any vegetable oil that would help loosen the flakes. You could loosen them by gently massaging the scalp with a comb, a toothbrush or a soft brush after shampooing. If it does not get better despite these measures, you would need to consult your paediatrician, who might prescribe additional medicines, which might sometimes be a mild topical steroid.
