There are different types of “skin allergies.” Skin allergy is usually referred to as “eczema” or scientifically named “dermatitis.” Dermatitis simply means “inflammation of the skin.” In childhood eczema, infants and children develop very dry, red, and itchy skin, especially in their skin folds such as the neck fold, elbow fold, or behind the knees. In severe cases, most of the body can be affected. The medical term for this condition is “Atopic Dermatitis.” Children and adults affected by this condition become very irritable, and in severe cases, it can cause them to stay up all night. The condition usually starts during the first couple of years of life, and most children grow out of it by the time they are 10-12 years old. However, some may continue to suffer from lifelong atopic dermatitis, although such cases are fewer, thankfully. Children suffering from this condition usually have a family history in which a family member has a history of similar skin conditions or eczema, nasal allergies, or hay fever (sneezing, coughing, and fever during hay season). It is extremely important to have proper evaluation of the eczema your child or you have before a proper treatment plan can be recommended. Most children with dry, flaky, and irritated pink or red skin in the aforementioned body areas are diagnosed with “Atopic Dermatitis” or childhood eczema. These children have a slightly higher risk of developing asthma and nasal allergies as well. Therefore, we advise the parents of such children to stay in constant touch with their pediatrician to treat other related ailments like nasal allergies promptly if they develop. Additionally, the skin of childhood eczema patients has tiny cracks called “micro fissures,” which make it susceptible to the penetration of allergy-causing chemicals and substances in the environment. Therefore, we devise a detailed plan for preventing eczema attacks once the eczema subsides. Alhamdulillah, we strive to provide the best care.
