Sometimes our black hair becomes such a frustrating battle when perfecting a hair growth hair care regiment. Dandruff, or its proper name, Seborrhoeic dermatitis, is birthed by constant dry spells that you put your scalp and hair through, in most cases. In most cases, a simple dandruff shampoo does the trick. Those that actually have dandruff can be confused sometimes between whether or not it really is a bad case of dandruff or dry scalp. What is the difference between the two? What is dandruff?

Sometimes when your scalp is itchy and flaky, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have dandruff. When we compare the two, dandruff vs dry scalp , there is a big difference. A typical itchy dry scalp is composed of fine, dry small flakes of skin on your scalp. With dandruff, its extremely flaky with waxy-like shedding skin. Imagine your hair a couple of days after a shampoo and then a couple of weeks without a shampoo, yes… big difference!

For others of course, you may have more than just typical dandruff, eczema or psoriasis may be the culprit.
I have mild eczema on my scalp and even though it is under control, at times, it is slightly itchy.
Using coconut oil has saved me from loosing so much hair and creating scalp sores because of the intense scratching sessions that those from skin conditions or skin disease suffer from.
I simply wet my scalp with water, and coat my scalp with this coconut oil whenever my scalp is dry.

Now that we know the difference between dandruff and dry scalp, I will reveal to you below why you may be experiencing issues with your itchy skin and dandruff.

Dandruff Reason #1 Excessive Dry Scalp

If you do not have a hair care regimen, this is exactly why you suffer from dandruff! Don’t stress over the fact that you may have a skin disorder or skin diseases, you may simply lack a moisturized scalp. Not knowing how often your scalp wants a shampoo, conditioning, or moisturizing session is why you are always facing a dandruff battle in you hair care! Figure out what works best for you, everyone is different. I co-wash my hair once a week and cleanse my hair with shampoo once every 2 weeks. For you, it may be a co-wash every other day and a shampoo once a month. Simply experiment to perfect your regimen.

Dandruff Reason #2 Product Buildup

Using pomades, sprays, hair gels, mousse, and other styling products, sits on top of your scalp until you wash them off. Moisturizing on top of hair products aggravates your skin and leaves you with an itchy scalp which overtimes, develops into dandruff! Maybe you should try to wash more often if you use a lot of products on your hair. I like to use Dr. Bronners Lavendar Shampoo if I need a good cleanse from my hair product use.

Dandruff Reason #3 Mineral Buildup In Your Water

Depending on where you may stay in the world, there may be a build up of of mineral products in your water. Sulfur, calcium, and some metals may be in your water and once they touch your hair and scalp, they have a pretty strong bond. My best suggestion is to use baby water (distilled water) to wash your scalp and hair or invest in a water filter. Maybe even one that can adjust to your shower head. But, if you cant afford to make these purchases…
