Why are my knees and elbows dark? How to lighten them? – Dr. Rasya Dixit

When we are worried about our body, we are worried about some specific areas which are usually much darker when compared to the rest of the body and these are ankles, knees, elbows and normally they are much darker than the rest of the body. In some people if they have one parents or grandparents who are much darker than the rest of the family, it is very much troubling because the patient looks fair and only these areas are specially dark. In people who gave these kind of constitutional hyperpigmentation, I am sorry to say that whatever treatments we have to offer on terms of skin lightening agents or chemical peels or laser, the results can be very disappointing, make sure that if you have very dark elbows and lines, you start using lots of fresh fruits, brightly coloured fruits and vegetables in your diet. This will increase the antioxidants and the skin may further lighten. Stop using bleaching agents, people have the habit of applying lemon over there and honey over there. These may irritate the skin and the skin might start looking darker. Instead use a lot of moisturiser and safe skin lightening agents like 12% glycolic acid, 20% xylic acid on a regular basis, at bed time and a sunscreen with 40 SPF in day time to prevent these form becoming darker. Quick fixes like chemical peels especially those containing tricholoroacetic acid can help to exfoliate and temporarily bring down the pigmentation so that you can attend the social events without feeling too bad.
