Traditionally oiling the head is something which we have all practiced and learnt from our mothers and grandmothers to do when our scalp is itchy. Did you know that you are providing a beautiful layer of oil for fungus to thrive? So when you are having dandruff, it’s ideal that you do not apply oil to the scalp. While oiling is a wonderful agent to make sure that your scalp and hair is healthy. You will need to understand why it is not recommended when you have dandruff. Sebum is secreted from the sebaceous or oil glands provides the right environment for the fungus to thrive. The fungus is not an external fungus. It is your own body’s fungus which we all carry on our skin. So you have to remember that whenever there is dandruff do not resort to applying hot oil or taking a massage on the scalp. This can only make it worse. So remember when you are having dandruff, you will have to use agents which are anti-dandruff containing molecules like in shampoos. These are ketoconazole, pyrithione and selenium disulfide. These are all the agents which a dermatologist would recommend for you but refrain putting oil on the scalp when the dandruff is active. You may put oil when you are completely devoid of dandruff. Choose to do it more for the length of the hair because it’s dead tissue. The right way to do is a cold pressed coconut oil which you apply weekly once for half an hour or one hour prior to your bath and cleanse it. Remember coconut oil is also very beneficial. It has antifungal property, protects you from the sun. it’s a conditioning agent but not to be used when you are having dandruff.
