How to get rid of itchy ears? – Dr. Satish Babu K

Normally we have a layer of wax in our ears inside the ears and all over the pinna. It works as a protectant which helps us protect from harmful chemicals, pollution, bacteria, viruses that may come in contact with the ear canal skin. If we have to remove wax for done reason, voluntarily if we keep putting a earbud and clean the ear, the skin of the ear will be exposed, gets dried up and starts itching. This is the most common reason for a patient to have itching ear. Now how do we prevent this? Basically avoid using the earbuds. Avoid cleaning the ear thoroughly. Even in a clinical scenario, we do not completely remove the entire layer of wax, we leave a thin layer of wax behind the skin. If you a habit of using the earbuds in a day to day, you remove the thin layer of wax exposing the skin. If you are forceful, you may remove the layer of skin and exposing the inner tissues for infection. Then pain, itching can always happen especially if you are using an earbud just after a bath. The usage of earbud just after a bath where we insert the earbud into the outer part of the canal and let it be there to absorb the moisture and come out. We do not dig in or take out the wax. The other common cause is dry skin causing itching to happen especially in the winter seasons. If you use a moisturizer, about half a centimeter into the ear canal with the ear bud. Dip the ear bud in the moisturizer, gently rotate so that you smear the area around and the dryness patch will be removed and you will have relief from the symptom. The other cause why you may have dryness in the ear is if you introduce water while taking bath or a habit of washing the ear with water or soaps, or people use ear buds without any indications, without any doctor’s consultation, then it introduces the watery moisture into the ear. That dilutes the ear, removes the wax and leads the skin to be dried up. More serious sinuses are infection, like fungal infection where the itching can be severe. Then you have to consult the doctor there. People who have skin diseases like psoriasis, allergic dermatitis, eczema, there can be some patches of skin diseases happening in the ear canal and the itching can happen, which can be treated by the expert.
