Dermatitis is a condition which there is inflammation of the skin there’s redness peeling of the skin and itching it can affect any area of the body. Perioral dermatitis means the kind of dermatitis which affects the area around the mouth. The most common cause for perioral dermatitis is a condition called as atopic dermatitis. In atopic dermatitis the people have very dry skin. So the area around the mouth is usually more dry even though the skin on the face might be oily the area around the mouth is usually dry atopic dermatitis can predispose people to get perioral dermatitis. They may get small cuts in the corner of the mouth they may get cuts on their lips they may get redness and peeling of the skin on the surrounding areas of the lips. So perioral dermatitis in most cases will respond to simple treatments like moisturizers. Sometimes prolonged use of steroid creams around the mouth can also cause perioral dermatitis and this can be infectious. Otherwise most of the other types of perioral dermatitis are non-infectious and steroids are sometimes even used for treatment of these kind of perioral dermatitis. So we have to understand what type of condition is causing . It is it is it just dryness? Is it the lip balm which is causing it is it the toothpaste which is causing it is there some underlying condition like iron deficiency anemia B12 deficiency. So all that has to be evaluated by the doctor and depending on what condition is causing your perioral dermatitis treatment varies accordingly.
