Eczema is a very common skin condition. Infact dermatologists see patients with eczema daily. Eczema is nothing but reaction of the skin to either external factors which is called as extrinsic eczema or it can be intrinsic eczema. So there are no external factors something like even stress can trigger an eczema. Most commonly we see intrinsic eczema. Extrinsic eczema can be allergy to a leather strap of your watch or leather footwear or it can be allergy to artificial jewellery or it can be allergy to some perfumes or fragrances and this has a specific term called as contact dermatitis. So eczema is a large range of conditions and some can be classified as some particular conditions. But some of them are just simply called as eczema. Eczema on the feet is a very very common form of eczema and this is usually related to stress and to dry skin. It gets worse usually in winters and scratching makes it worse and unfortunately it’s a very itchy condition. So it’s a cycle where the eczema starts off causing itching the patient scratches and makes the eczema worse. This can be treated by certain anti-inflammatory creams usually containing steroids. There are some non-steroid creams like crisaborole or tacrolimus which are also used to treat eczemas and for very severe eczema internal medicines or oral medication is required the dermatologist will be able to decide whether you need internal medication or external creams. Using some soft non-fragrant moisturizers or fragrance-free moisturizers are usually very helpful in controlling the itching sensation in eczema. Also certain medications like antihistamines are very useful in controlling the itching in eczema. So if you’re suffering from a chronic eczema or a long-standing eczema visit a dermatologist near you.
