Let’s talk about diaper rash. This is something that all parents encounter. In medical terms, we call it as diaper dermatitis. It’s also known as irritant contact dermatitis because there is irritation when the skin is in contact with either urine or stool. And usually, this is very common in newborn babies. Some tips for first-time moms to prevent diaper rash in their babies. There are five tips. We can say it is A, B, C, D, E for you to remember easily. A is to air out the diaper area. Keep the baby’s diaper free as much as possible to prevent the onset of a diaper rash. B is for the usage of a barrier cream, like zinc oxide-based or petrolatum cream, which will help prevent the rash from occurring because it’s a lubricant that helps heal the diaper area. C is to keep checking the baby’s diaper area often and clean right away after the area is soiled. And generally, it’s better not to use wipes. You can use cotton balls dipped in lukewarm water to clean the diaper area. D is for disposable diapers or cloth nappies, which can be changed frequently. E is to educate and be aware of how to prevent the recurrence of a diaper rash. Usually, if there’s a diaper rash, the diaper area would look very red and painful for the baby at times. You can see some scaling and patches also. This can be caused by a secondary infection by a bacteria or fungus at times and would need treatment by a paediatrician. Pen, should you see a doctor if your baby has a diaper rash? One, if the rash seems to worsen despite application of the barrier cream at home. If the source seems to look very painful or there’s past draining from the wound, if the baby is fussy and not feeding well, if the baby has a fever, which is a temperature of more than 100.4. If the baby has loose stools or is not urinating well, these would be the red flags to see your paediatrician immediately.
