Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition that can cause intense itching, dryness, and inflammation. The urge to scratch can be overwhelming, and for many people, using hot water provides temporary relief—it creates a sensation that can drown out the itch for a moment.
However, this short-term comfort comes at a cost. Hot water strips the skin of its natural oils, which are already deficient in people with eczema. This worsens dryness, damages the skin barrier further, and can lead to more flare-ups. It also increases inflammation and can trigger a rebound itch, making the cycle even harder to break.
Instead, lukewarm water and gentle, fragrance-free cleansers are recommended, followed immediately by a thick moisturizer to lock in hydration. Managing eczema is about protecting the skin’s barrier—and while hot water may feel soothing in the moment, it ultimately works against long-term healing.
