Eczema and COVID-19: Stress and not sleeping effect the skin

Eczema and COVID-19 Stress fuels inflammation in the body if you have underlying inflammatory problems like eczema, this is when things flare.

Hey everyone. This is dr. Peter Leo, and I wanted to talk about two things that a lot of us are experiencing big changes during this difficult time, Eczema and COVID-19, and they are stress and sleep and the first one let’s.

Talk about stress, a lot of people are under a huge amount of stress right now. There’s, been massive disruption to our lives. Some people are out of work. Some people are home working at home, which is difficult.

They might still have their job, but they’re, trying to balance working at home, which can be a big big change for many people. A lot of our students are out of school right now and that’s stressful too.

Stress Fuels Inflammation Eczema and COVID-19

So we know that without any questions, stress fuels inflammation in the body, so this is a difficult time for many people and if you already have underlying inflammatory problems like eczema, this can be a time where things flare.

So, on the other side of that, we need to take good care of ourselves, and one way we can do that is through getting good sleep. This is often very difficult for patients with eczema, because the itching keeps them up at night, but to the best we can.

Skin and overall mental health

Maybe the silver lining with Eczema and COVID-19 is that we can be home a little bit more. We can do a really nice bedtime, routine and people can get more sleep than during the normal busy time of year. When everyone’s running around, I’m, hoping that, with better quality sleep, we will see a good effect on the skin and overall mental health and well-being.

I find that for me, if I’m, not sleeping well, I start to break down. Everything starts to fall apart, and I see that in my patients a lot to their itch either uncomfortable. They’re inflamed that’s affecting their sleep, which is making everything worse and they begin to go down this very, very vicious cycle.

So if we can really work on sleep hygiene, finding a good way to have a routine at night, many people find that if they can lie in bed comfortably and do some sort of a relaxation technique, many people will do the one where they close their eyes And they kind of tighten up each part of their body from the head all the way down to the toes and then relax that’s, a wonderful way.

They kind of take your body through a gentle technique to get you to sleep deeply and well, so that you feel better so that the immune system calms down so that your mind is sharp and back to feeling at its best.

I wish everyone well during this difficult time and or to seeing you guys at the next one be well
