Eczema and Love P1: Family –
Today, I start a 4-Part Series on Communication with Eczema: how to talk about it in a way that is empowering for people with eczema and educational for the people who love them and mean well, but may accidentally or unintentionally come off preachy, panicky, or naggy.
Today’s video is about communicating with family members.
One of the biggest things I think needs to be developed in the eczema/atopic dermatitis community is language around eczema that makes people with eczema feel safe, supported, and comfortable speaking about their experiences without the backlash of getting into a pity party or preachy situation with those they live with who may mean to be helpful, but end up making them feel judged or unsafe speaking about the pain they’re going through because the family member might freak out or just plain not be emotionally strong enough to handle it. Over time, I’ve learned that family members are doing their best with what they’ve got. And so are we.
Hopefully this video and others like it will help people with eczema and their families find common ground and give more insight into potential techniques that may be much more effective at helping the experience of living with eczema be a much easier one at home and one where unconditional love thrives as opposed to feeling exposed, helpless and defensive.
