Childhood eczema is also called atopic dermatitis or atopic eczema where it starts in infancy that is in the first year of life. It’s called infantile eczema. When it starts in childhood. It’s called childhood atopic dermatitis. Sometimes the childhood atopic derimatitis can persist till adulthood and it’s called the adult atopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis cause severely itchy red rashes common on the face it can also occur on the limbs and trunk. When it becomes chronic the lesions become dry thick and lichory white and often remain confined to the flexus. Atopic dermatitis is often a genetically predisposed condition occurring in patients with an atopic diathesis . An atopic diathesis means in the family there might be both respiratory allergies and skin allergies. The respiratory allergies can manifest as allergic ritis that is nasal allergy or wheezing that is asthma. If one member of the family has asthma another member in the family can have skin eczema. Atopic dermatitis patients often have a lot of dry skin and it often aggravates in the dry weather that’s in winters. Sometimes when there is increase sweating it can aggravate summer too. The patient has to moisturize the skin quite frequently once immediately of the bath within the few minutes and subsequently atleast about two to three times in a day. So moisturizing forms the main stay of treatment of atopic dermatitis. There are some other general measures which have to be followed one of them is that you have to use cotton clothes preferably loose clothes. Avoid woollen and synthetic garments. Aero allergens can also aggravate it. So avoid atmosphere with a lot of dust and pollution. Occasionally sun exposure can also aggravate and you have to use a sunscreen too. Do not use very hot water for bath and while bathing always use moisturizing soaps or moisturizing cleansing lotions or moisturizing syndet bars. And avoid alkaline soaps or medicated soaps in patients with eczema. Harsh chemicals and detergents can also trigger atopic eczema. So try to avoid them and remember that in addition stress is also a very important factor. So try to reduce your stress levels. Try to reduce the stress levels of the child in the school and counseling is required in this regard. In addition to moisturizers which form the main stay of treatment in atopic eczema other topical treatments available are topical steroids, topical agents like tacrolimus or pimecrolimus. In moderate and severe patients the doctor might prescribe oral drugs like oral steroids cyclosporine. There is also a biological agent called Dupilumab which is now available for very severe resist and recalcitrant atopic dermatitis patients.
