Psoriasis is a very common papillo squamous disorder which is encountered in our day-to-day practice. The exact cause of psoriasis is not known hereditary factors may be involved in about 10% of patients. Immunologically mediated changes in the human body can be responsible for triggering psoriasis in our patients. Psoriasis can occur in all age groups though common in young adults. Adults and it can affect both sexes male and female it causes typical red scaly patches with silvery white scales. There will be pores or itching and the common sides affected are the scalp where you get thick dander like scales you may get thick scales on the palms and soles also common over the joints like the elbows knees and ankles and it can also occur on the body that is chest and back the face is often spared in psoriasis which may be a blessing in disguise. Psoriasis has a tendency to aggravate in winter and subside in summer in addition to skin, sometimes the nails are affected in psoriasis which can cause biting of the nails and separation of the nail plate from the nail bed. There are some serious complications of psoriasis which can occur though rare one of these complications is affection of the joints where the patient can have psoriatic arthropathy. Other serious complications which can occur in psoriasis in severely affected patients are psoriatic arthroderma and pustular psoriasis which can be either localized or generalized when you are diagnosed with psoriasis. You have to undergo some lifestyle modifications. You have to reduce your weight if you’re overweight and obese you have to stop smoking. Try to avoid alcohol as far as possible. Reduce your stress levels by doing yoga and meditation. Also remember that if you have diabetes and hypertension it has to be properly treated and if your lipid levels are high, your cholesterol and triglycerides are high kindly take adequate treatment to bring them under control. These are some lifestyle modifications and factors which you have to consider to reduce yourpsoriatic severity. Also remember that there are certain drugs like beta blockers used in psoriasis which can trigger your psoriasis. So rest of the medications which you’re taking especially for hypertension and tell your doctor about the same if required your doctor will ask you to change those medications. Your dermatologist will prescribe your topical medications like moisturizers, topical steroids, salicylic acid ointments, coal tar ointment, calciotriol ointment etc. But your psoriasis is moderately severe or severe you may need oral medications like methotraxate, cyclosporin, acitretin, apremilast etc. There are also biological agents available now for the treatment of psoriasis for moderate and severe cases. So if you are diagnosed with psoriasis do not panic. Stay calm. Consult your dermatologist. Take proper treatment and get healthy.
