What is hair botox and its side effects – Dr. Divya Sharma

Hair botox, also known as Brazilian keratin treatment is quite popular especially with youngsters and many of them come to my OPD and ask whether I should go for it or not. Hair botox or Brazilian keratin treatment uses conventionally formaldehyde or formaldehyde releasing agents. How do they give that smooth shiny appearance to the hair. formaldehyde has nothing to do with the hair but it breaks the bonds of the hair and realigns the keratin filaments in a way that they reflect light more strongly so that they give a shiny, supple, healthy looking hair like look. Let us understand why your dermatologist doesn’t want to go for Brazilian keratin or Hair botox treatment. Number one these formaldehyde releasing derivatives or the formaldehyde itself is a controversial molecule with reports of it triggering cancer in certain subpopulations though we are looking or other sides, though it has been proven in animal studies and proven that the formaldehyde used in these treatments can be carcinogenic. It has also been show to induce genetic mutations in unborn children f women using this for straightening the hair. This not only irritate your eyes but also puts you at the risk of getting allegoric reaction. So a patient who just has had this treatment can develop an eczema or a rash , couple of months even later. As a dermatologist and a dermatotrichologist, also because it damages the cuticular structure of your hair in the long term. After the initial 6 to 8 weeks of having this ultraglamorus looking hair, people come to us complaining of hair breakage which is sometimes very difficult to manage. So please think twice before following or doing this popular but not safe Hair botox, or Brazilian keratin treatment.
