Watch as Parents Magazine shows when to worry about food allergies! Ninety percent of food allergy symptoms are caused by milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, or soy. Within a few minutes to an hour of eating a specific food, your baby could experience the side effects of food allergies. However, it could take days, especially if your breastfeeding baby has a reaction to a food you have eaten. These are the three symptoms to watch for. A skin rash, such as hives, will produce itchy bumps as a classic allergic reaction. Eczema is another common symptom. Consistent diarrhea or vomiting after eating a particular food may mean your baby has a food allergy, but it could also be a sign of an intolerance, which is less serious. Blood-streaked stool is a common indicator of a cow’s milk allergy, or lactose intolerance. Lastly, circulation and breathing issues are very serious signs of allergic reactions. Call 911 immediately if he is experiencing anaphylaxis, the most serious food allergy symptom. Luckily, more than 80 percent of allergies to eggs, milk, wheat, and soy fade by age five.
