Hard water contains undissolved salts of calcium and magnesium. They disrupt the outer protective layers of the skin which is comprised of the natural moisturising factor. As a result we frequently come across of patients who complain of excessive dryness of the skin. We also have seen a large number of patients especially paediatric population complaining of severe atopic dermatitis as these hard water salts can precipitate or even aggravate pre-existing tendency of having atopic eczema. There is also an increased rise of acne, especially the late onset acne in a sub set of patient who doesnโt even have a hormonal imbalance but they still have acne recalcitrant to conventional therapy. A lot of patients that I know see especially the ones who are using hard water complaining of back acne that is very severe in nature.
