Evan S. Dellon, MD, MPH, Gastroenterologist, and Professor of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, explains two things that physicians should know about eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE).
EoE is a chronic, allergic inflammatory disease characterized by the buildup of eosinophils in the lining of the esophagus. Signs and symptoms are dependent on age but EoE patients often experience difficulty feeding, poor weight gain, heartburn, regurgitation, and dysphagia. The nonspecific nature of these symptoms often leads to a long diagnostic journey for these patients.
As Dr. Dellon explains, EoE tends to be a chronic condition and we currently do not fully understand the long-term natural history of the disease or its triggers. Secondly, the management of EoE requires a team approach to care and it is important for different specialties (i.e., pediatrics, gastroenterology) to work and communicate with each other to provide the best care for the patient.
