Diaper rash or diaper dermatitis

Diaper rash or diaper dermatitis is a common skin problem in babies. It is any rash inside the diaper area caused by contact with something that irritates the skin. It is also known as “diaper dermatitis” and can be very uncomfortable for your baby. Diaper rash usually improves with simple treatments, but it sometimes can be difficult to get rid of.
The main cause of diaper rash is prolonged exposure to urine and stool in diaper. Other causes are yeast infections, bacterial infections, allergies and use of chemical products like certain soaps or baby powder.
If your baby’s diaper area looks irritated and red, it could be diaper rash. The skin may also be a little puffy and feel warm if you touch it. In mild cases, it will look pinky but in severe cases it will be more red and painful, it will make your baby crying. If there is yeast infection it may have red spots along the edges.
Now you will ask what to do or “how can I prevent?
You must change diapers often trying to minimize contact with urine and stools. Clean the diaper area gently with a soft cloth or a squirt of water from a bottle. Use mild soap when you give your baby a bath. Don’t use or use fewer wipes, sometimes wipes contain alcohol and it irritates your baby’s skin.
Apply a barrier cream to prevent diaper rash. It is recommended to use one that does not have medicine or perfume. Pastes and ointments that contain petroleum or zinc oxide are better barriers than creams and lotions. And remember, Rashes caused by yeast and bacterial infections need a prescription, some signs that the rash is infected include blisters on the diaper area, fever, redness, swelling of the area and presence of pus; you should visit your doctor.
