Dermatologist Dr.TWL explains the science behind how a jelly peel works and the benefits of using such a jelly peel mask.
Jelly gel peels are usually marketed as peel off masks and are made of carbomers and cellulose. Peeling gels were popularised by J-beauty as a gentle way to exfoliate facial skin without irritation. A gel peel describes a skincare product formulated for exfoliation, that has the texture of a gel.
Traditional exfoliators have a cream/lotion liquid texture that incorporates tiny beads that abrade skin. This irritates skin with prolonged use and is no longer recommended by dermatologists. The point of exfoliation is to encourage renewal of skin cells, revealing smooth, radiant and soft skin. Physical exfoliation actually damages the skin barrier and this is why dermatologists recommend in-office chemical peels for effective exfoliation instead. On the other hand, gel peels are a good option for at-home facial peels, as it is gentler on skin and safe for sensitive skin types, which we go into more details in this video as below.
