Bio Oil & Essential skin oils- Dermatologist Review
Bio Oil and essential oils are nice to smell, nice to touch and may feel good on your skin. This ends the topic on oils and their role in anti-aging, acne scars, and stretch marks. The only oil that has been shown to be effective is tea tree oil for acne- this paper was published last year in the Australian College of Dermatology Journal. A very good study showing the efficacy of tea tree oils in decreasing acne count. Bio Oil and other essential oils are comedogenic and may clog pores, leading to blackheads, acne, zits and pimples. Not recommended for patients who are trying to clear up their acne scars. Oils are not effective for acne scars and can actually worsen pigmentation and cause more acne.
Acne scars should be treated based upon the scar type. Ice pick scars should be treated with TCA CROSS, box car scars with microneedling RF, as well as fractional lasers. Tethered scars should be treated with subcsion, and red scars with vascular lasers. PIH or post inflammatory hyperpigmentation can be treated with SPF, bleaching creams and low dose pigment lasers. Bio Oil may cause a photoallergic or photoirritant dermatitis and make these scars worse. More videos on how to treat acne scars in my playlist.
Stretch marks should be treated with vascular lasers, vitamin A and Stratmark. Old stretch marks can be improved with lasers, RF, microneedling, Vitamin A as well as PRP. There are no robust studies regarding Bio Oil and stretch marks.
