Healing Eczema With Diet (Topical Steroid Withdrawal)

After reaching it’s peak of red, swollen, oozy and painful skin over her entire body, we decided our daughter’s eczema had gone too far. It was all over her body and reaching up her cheeks and on to her eyelids. It had never been this bad, and we realised something was not right. After doing a lot of research, I came across Topical Steroid Addiction, aka Red Skin Syndrome. It’s an effect of (unintentional) over-use of topical steroids. We never realised the impact of putting even a low-dose topical steroid on top of itched skin and under taped pyjamas… it increases the absorption into the body. We stopped the steroid immediately, and within a week the swelling had gone down, and the healing began. That is where we were at when this video starts. I did a lot of research on clean eating and gut healing through this process, not only because recovering from TSA and entering Topical Steroid Withdrawal can be a long, painful process; but also because we did not want to find ourselves in this position again. It is painful and traumatic watching your child in such pain and distress, unable to control herself from itching until she bleeds.
You will find that if you are going through this process, the skin will start to flake and ‘snow’ as it heals. This is part of the process but will resolve over time. Our daughter’s skin has just stopped flaking and looking really good now: smooth and supple with minimal itching. It has been approximately 6 weeks since we stopped the topical steroid cream (and all petroleum-based products as well).
