A lot of us are worried when w e have white patches on the skin. I am here to discuss with you what are some of the common causes for White Patches on Skin and how we can diagnose them and treat them. One of the most common causes for White Patches on Skin is P. Alba. Pityriasis alba is a common cause for White Patches on Skin and it is a very hypopigmented skin, that means the skin colour is slightly lighter than normal, it is not completely white. It is associated with a fine scaling or a fine dryness on the surface and it can be treated with the use of a good moisturizer. Usually it disappears on its own. Second common cause is Tinea versicolor. It is commonly seen on the chest and the back as a dry scaly patch. Some of the patches may be darker and some may be lighter and it can be treated with an antifungal cream. Other common cause is sun allergy. There is something called as polymorphous light eruption, where because of the sun allergy you get piueegmaattaaan or lightening of the skin colour. It may be associated with burning sensation when you go out in the sun. In this condition the skin colour is lighter than the skin but it is not completely white. If the skin colour is completely white and the hair on the patch is also completely white then you have to think of vitiligo. Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition. It has to be treated with a combination of creams and tablets, but it can be controlled and it can be treated as well to restore the skin colour to normal. If you have a white patch and you want to get treated, speak to your dermatologist today.
