How to Treat Keratosis Pilaris (“strawberry legs” or “chicken skin”) like a Dermatologist.

Keratosis pilaris (KP) usually presents as rough, bumpy skin on the arms and/or legs and is pretty common. If you are bothered by your KP, here’s a three step routine I swear by as a dermatologist to help get rid of those bumps:

1. Use a gentle exfoliant in the shower 3-4x per week. Avoid loofahs which are a breeding ground for bacteria and just make skin more irritated. Try the KP Bump Eraser from First Aid Beauty which contains an AHA blend and gentle mechanical exfoliants to loosen trapped hairs and soften rough skin.

2. Apply glycolic acid on a cotton pad 3-4x per week. Glycolic acid is both a keratolytic (helps remove excess skin) and humectant (draws in moisture) making it a great treatment for bumps on the arms or legs. The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution is a nice affordable option.

3. Apply a urea moisturizer daily. Urea is one of the most underrated skincare actives and can soften and hydrate rough skin like no other. Try La Roche-Posay Lipikar 10% Urea which is packed with ceramides to protect the skin barrier and is perfect for sensitive skin.
