What are other itchy scaly conditions of scalp? – Dr. Parthasarathi Dutta Roy

Other than dandruff there are few other itchy scaly conditions of scalp like seborrheic dermatitis where you see scaling as well. It will be more severe than usual dandruff. Seborrheic areas of the body like the scalp, upper back, chest, nasolabial fold, eyebrows all these areas will be involved. Scales in seborrheic dermatitis are greasy and brown in colour where as in normal dandruff the scales will be very fine and loosely adherent to the scalp. Another common scalp condition is scalp psoriasis. Here the severity is even more. In scalp psoriasis usually we will see thick white sheet of scales and we also can see involvement of other part of the body. Coming to the treatment it is nothing but like the treatment of dandruff and few other things like seborrheic dermatitis I will give you some systemic terrors and shampoo will be stronger steroid based shampoo. In case of scalp psoriasis I may give tar shampoo. Steroid shampoo can also be used. Sometimes we use methotrexate 7.5 mg. People with ectopic dermatitis can have mild scaling on their scalp. Also some fungal infections of the scalp like tinea capitis we can see scaling. So these are the scalp problems other than dandruff.
