Foot problems can happen at any point of time at any age in any season. But during certain period there is some particular damage which can happen. So in winter what can happen? So what is winter? The winter temperature comes down. When the temperature comes down the skin is more prone for dryness. And as it is the acral parts of the body that is below the knees and below the elbow these areas are more prone for dust dirt and external damages and the dryness is also more. So whenever the skin is dry it is like a broken skin. So whenever the skin is broken it is more prone for all the infections and allergies so what can happen in the feet? So whenever there is dryness the feet is more exposed to the trauma as well and that can set in lot of eczemas. So eczemas are one of the common problem and nowadays we see it across all age groups. One it is because of very faulty habits. See sometimes especially in winter. What we do is since it’s cold we take lot of hot water shower because we feel very nice with that. But what does a hot water do. So it takes away the natural skin moisturizers. Once the natural skin moistures are removed naturally the dryness gets aggravated. When you’re having bath it’s very a nice pleasurable experience. But once you get out of the washroom you start scratching your skin. So the same thing can happen even in the feet and this we are seeing nowadays across all age groups we children teenagers or adolescents or adults we are seeing in everyone. So first is we need to avoid excessive hot water shower during winter because the dinates aggravated. So one is eczema what can happen next whenever the skin is broken it’s also prone for infections what infections can happen the bacterial infection. So once the bacteria sets in here it can give you cellulitis. So when people develop. Cellulitis there’s a lot of redness pain and swelling in the feet or in the legs and it is one of condition which we need to treat on an urgent basis why because it tends to go up. So once the infection starts going up it becomes more difficult to handle and sometimes it creates lot of pressure in the legs that can impair the blood circulation. So any cellulitis needs immediate medical attention and sometimes when cellulite is severe. Actually it requires a surgical intervention the slit upon the skin so that the pressure is released. So for that reason we need to take care of the skin. So try to prevent excessive dryness and try to maintain a soft skin. Third thing is it’s not only bacterial infection even fungal infections can increase but the fungal infection are more slower to sit in and the damage is not so acute. Over a period of time people will develop lot of maceration between the toes or they develop fungal infections like ringworm infections where it is very itchy scratchy and it is ring shaped. So either eczemas or bacterial or fungal infections can happen when the skin is dry and to maintain this or to improve this first and foremost is avoiding the damage. So don’t use very heavy soaps strong soaps don’t use very hot water and how do we treat or prevent this during winters. Everyone should apply an oil to the skin either it can be coconut oil or it can be sesame oil and nicely massage and then take bath while taking bath it’s better to use a non foaming or a non soapy cleanser these are cleansers which are milder they don’t form they don’t take away the skin moistures more aggressively and immediately after bath when the skin is soft we need to apply a lot of moisturizers. Moisturizers work better when applied on a damp skin and application of moisture should be multiple times. It is just like when we are thirsty we start drinking water multiple times till our thirst comes down. The same way till the skin becomes soft you need to apply moist daily number of times. It can be three to four times or 6 to 8 times depends upon the intensity of the dryness. And another important thing is there’s a medical condition called as icthyosis which is by birth or it could be because of some medical conditions like uncontrolled thyroid or uncontrolled diabetes or when people are anti cholesterol tablets, lipid lowering agents. So then also the skin can become dry so these people also have to take lot of efforts in maintaining a smooth skin to prevent the damage to the skin and complication.
