Meditations on Eczema Series Part 6 – Identity

Music: “Relaxing” by Royalty Free Music from Bensound – www.bensound.com

I cannot emphasize enough how we all are still human beings underneath all of the stress and the rashes of eczema. I’ve called myself The Human Rash. In my teens and early 20s, I thought I looked like a burn victim, constantly burning hot red rashes and feeling like I was always swollen and on fire, paranoid of the next flareup. I was often stared at and given advice from people who never experienced having eczema and given horrified and pitied looks. I used to allow eczema to define me and my life. BUT, it did not stop me from pursuing my creative passions in writing, performance (karaoke – www.youtube.com/user/terryalabata), and currently eco makeup artistry and hairstyling (www.terryalabata.com, IG @terryalabataecomuah). Focusing more on my humanity and other aspects of my life allowed me to both distract myself from the itching and to show people my talents which helped them see past my skin. Somehow, some way, find the strength of mind to channel your pain into your art, or other part of life you enjoy and the joy with spread and you will be able to share it with others. There are more loving and compassionate people out there than you may realize and many more to meet. Eczema is just on the surface. Show people who you really are.
