What are pain relief medications for labor and childbirth? – Dr. Nupur Sood

Pain relief during labor and childbirth is a big challenge as we all know, it is a painful challenge. Although it is a normal physiology to have pain, everybody would prefer if you could have a normal delivery without pain. So we have this magical treatment called as epidural analgesia which we have from several years and easily available now at most places. It basically involves small analgesia given on your back when you go into your active part of your labor and once this labor pains have started, and the injection has been given , you are relieved from the main pain, but the uterine contractions continue and you go in for a normal delivery still. The other modality that we have is called as entonox. This is basically combination of oxygen and nitrous oxide gas or it is given in the form of a mask when you have the very strong pan and it gives you a little relief. So with these two modalities, you are definitely going on for normal delivery and without the fear of that you are going to land up in a caesarian. These are good modalities and you can ask your doctor for it and during the childbirth process itself when you are going in for an actual delivery procedure, a small cut is given called as the episiotomy. So while that is being sutured also local anesthesia is given. So we have very good safe, pain relief medications available to encourage everybody to go in for a normal delivery.
