Coconut Oil for Eczema: How to Use It?

What are the Benefits of Coconut Oil for Eczema and How to Use It?

Coconut oil is quite beneficial for skin due to its antioxidant, antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties.

It reduces the inflammation, and soothes your skin during a flare-up.

It also contains lauric acid, which is helpful in treating viral infections, because it gets converted within our body into monolaurin – a chemical compound, effective against viruses, bacteria, fungus, etc.

Coconut oil also contains vitamins E and K, caprylic and capric acid.

These components nourish and repair the skin, decreasing skin’s flaking and itching along the way.

How to Use Coconut Oil for Eczema

First of all, you need to buy organic extra virgin coconut oil to get the full benefit out of it.

1. Direct Application

It’s the simplest way to use this oil: just apply it where needed 2-3 times a day.

For example, you can do it in the morning, before the shower, then during the day, and before going to bed.

If you have to move around, keep a small container of coconut oil with you.

2. Eating It

Eating coconut oil comes in two ways: a) eating it alone – 2-4 tablespoons a day, which is very effective; b) adding coconut oil to your drinks, smoothies and salads, or just cooking with it.

3. Make a Mask

Take 5 tablespoons of diluted coconut oil, 2 tablespoons of vitamin E oil and 2 tablespoons of rosemary oil.

Add all these ingredients into a small bottle, and shake it well to combine them nicely.

Apply the mixture on your skin where needed, and wash off after 10 minutes. Repeat as necessary.

4. Coconut Oil Bandage

This bandage is helpful with the rough and prone to break up skin, because it makes the skin softer.

You need to warm 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, soak a cotton pad in it, and use the pad over the rough area.

Leave it there for 15-20 minutes, then remove the pad, and wipe off the excess oil with tissue paper.

This simple bandage gives a good relief during flare-ups, and night-time itching, and can be used for children too.

5. Bath Oil

Add 3-5 tablespoons of coconut oil and 5 drops of lavender or tea tree oil to your bath.

Take the bath, as usual, but after that, either let your skin dry on its own, or gently pat dry with a soft towel.

Having such a bath before bedtime, will give you itching-free sleep, and will leave your skin supple and soft.
