In an interview with Future Medicine, Dr Sangeetha, the Medical Director of Shanthi Ayurvedic Psoriasis Speciality Hospital, talks about various procedures of psoriasis treatment
What are the specialties of Shanthi Ayurvedic Psoriasis Speciality Hospital?
We specialise in psoriasis treatment, using Ayurvedic medicines like kashayam, churnas, and oil prepared as per our specifications. We have formulated these medicines on the basis of intensive research and development initiatives. Our medicines have been made in accordance with the requirement of patients. They are available for the general public at our counters. We have even treated patients with acute psoriasis who had tried Allopathic medicines for 20-30 years. Besides psoriasis, we treat skin disorders like eczema, scleroderma, and pemphigus.
What is the main difference between Allopathic Ayurvedic treatment for psoriasis?
Allopathic treatment for psoriasis has certain limitations. With use of steroids and antibiotics, doctors are able to contain the disease for a limited time period. But a complete cure is a distant dream since the disease relapses. At our hospital, we use pure Ayurvedic medicines. Though they don’t produce quick results, complete cure can be assured to patients who are ready to follow a certain diet as instructed by the doctor. Our treatment focusses on helping a patient develop immunity against this disease.
From where all have you been receiving patients?
People from various parts of the country are coming to us. The majority of them are from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, and Uttar Pradesh. We receive patients from the Gulf as well.
What’s the mental make-up of the patients suffering from psoriasis?
Psoriasis can cause several physical discomforts and public embarrassment. But in most cases, patients would have taken recourse to Ayurveda after repeated failure in Allopathy. Psoriasis is a serious disease. If not treated properly, it can spread to the joints as well as the inner parts of the fingernails. One may also lose his/her nails in the longer run. New skin cells generate at a much faster rate than dead cells. The excess in skin cells then accumulate to form thick patches. Psoriasis can be caused by an infection, injury, or stress. The use of certain drugs, such as anti-depressants, anti-hypertensive drugs, beta blockers, and anti-malarial drugs, can produce psoriasis in certain cases.
What are the challenges you are facing in production of Ayurvedic medicines for this disease?
The new laws have placed certain restrictions on production of medicines. So, we provide the raw materials to a company for preparation of medicines. The availability of raw materials has also become problematic. Though the new laws are good in several ways, they make the situation of small scale medicine developers like us worse.
What are the precautions one can take against psoriasis?
Ayurveda has identified a few food items (virudhahara) that cannot be consumed simultaneously. Strict adherence to this disciplinary practice is the first step (of avoidance). For example, curd and milk items with non-vegetarian food items. Patients must not take non-vegetarian food items during the course of the treatment.
