Dermatologist vs. Esthetician – What is the Difference?
It’s important to understand that estheticians and dermatologists are not the same. For example, estheticians are not qualified to make any diagnoses for medical conditions like rosacea or psoriasis. However, estheticians can make a significant difference in their clients’ skin by performing facials, recommending customized skincare regimens,
and ensuring that you’re doing everything in your power to reveal your skin at its best.
A dermatologist can:
treat acne, eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea
prescribe oral or topical medications
perform surgeries on skin abnormalities
diagnose skin conditions and disorders, like skin cancer
lessen signs of aging
An esthetician can:
perform facials, body wraps, and waxing
conduct a skin analysis
perform microdermabrasion
recommend a complete at-home regimen for a client
provide chemical peels
How to decide between visiting a Dermatologist or an Esthetician:
A dermatologist and an esthetician differ because a dermatologist is typically clinical, whereas an estheticians’ expertise can be luxurious. While both focus on the skin, dermatologists are medical doctors that specialize in skin health and treatment. Estheticians, also called skin care specialists, focus primarily on the appearance of the skin. While the professions are different, estheticians can often work with dermatologists in clinical settings. Find more tips and products:
