Is Icthyosis Vulgaris Eczema? Dermatologist Explains What is it

I is for Icthyosis Vulgaris. Did you know that ichthyosis is a form of eczema? In fact, many individuals are born with this genetic defect. Listen on in ABCs of Dermatology in #LearningIsFun with Ash and I.

Welcome back to learning is fun with me and Ash. So today, we are at the letter I and the dermatological condition we are going to be talking about is known as Icthyosis. Icthyosis Vulgaris is what we call an autosomal dominant condition, which affects people from the same family. So, how it looks like is rather peculiar. In fact, the term Icthyosis has its origins from the term ichthys, which is a latin version of fish scales. It essentially has a fish-scale like appearance that earns it its name.

Those who suffer from Icthyosis generally start developing symptoms from the age of 3 to 12 months, and it progresses and also persists into adulthood. Icthyosis is associated with genetic defect in the profilaggrin and filaggrin genes, resulting also in deficient barrier function. This is why those with Icthyosis Vulgaris are also treated for eczema. Did you like this content? Remember to follow me.
