There could be three main reasons for “acne” around your vaginal area:
1. Atopic Dermatitis:
An itchy inflammation of the skin.
Atopic dermatitis usually develops in early childhood and is more common in people who have a family history of the condition.
The main symptom is a rash that typically appears on the arms and behind the knees, but can also appear anywhere.
Treatment includes avoiding soap and other irritants. Certain creams or ointments also may provide relief from the itching.
2. Folliculitis:
Infection of one or more of the pockets from which hair grows (follicles).
Folliculitis may be more common among those with acne. Shaving and use of topical steroid creams can also increase the risk of developing this condition.
Small, white-headed pimples appear around the hair follicles. They may itch or be painful. Severe infections can cause permanent hair loss and scarring.
Mild cases often clear on their own. Antibiotics or other drugs may be needed for severe cases.
3. Hidradenitis Suppurativa:
A chronic skin condition featuring lumps in places such as the armpits or groin.
The skin lesions develop as a result of inflammation and infection of sweat glands.
This condition features pea- to marble-sized lumps under the skin that can be painful and tend to enlarge and drain pus. They usually occur where skin rubs together, such as in the armpits, groin, and buttocks.
Medications, corticosteroid injections, and sometimes surgery can help manage symptoms.
If you have any other questions, the best thing is to call your gynecologist.
