Pain in the areolar area can be because of trauma. Squeezing can definitely cause pain. Second thing is there is gynecomastia. Men have a fibrous fatty tissue below the areolar area, it looks like male breast and this can sometimes lead to discomfort. Nowadays people are more concerned about the looks and when people see a small bump in that area, so people tend to somatise the symptoms as pain, discomfort, a stretching sensation, heavy sensation or pulling sensation in that area when they see a small bulge beneath the areolar area. Atopic children are prone to lot of allergic reactions and nipples are never spared. People can develop itching, oozing and crusting in that area. When it gets secondarily infected, it gives rise to pain. Whenever there’s itching and pain. So when there is inflammation and itching, it hurts. So when it is because of somatization, then counseling works and when there is obvious swelling beneath the areola in the male breast, then we need to get it removed. When there is eczema or secondary bacterial infection then treatment with antibiotics, creams, some moisturizers, the inflammation can be brought under control and it can be resolved.
