The transcript of the video:
Blepharitis is a common and often chronic condition that involves inflammation of the eyelids. It’s typically characterised by red, swollen eyelids, the appearance of flaky skin or dandruff around the eyes, and a burning or gritty sensation.
The exact cause of blepharitis can vary. Anterior blepharitis is often caused by a bacterial infection or seborrheic dermatitis, a condition that leads to dandruff of the scalp and eyebrows. On the other hand, posterior blepharitis is usually due to problems with the oil glands in the lids, and can be linked to skin conditions such as acne rosacea.
Management of blepharitis often involves maintaining eyelid hygiene to reduce the build-up of bacteria and oils. This can include warm compresses, eyelid massages, and regular cleansing of the eyelids with a prescribed solution or baby shampoo.
In more severe cases, doctors may recommend antibiotic ointments or oral antibiotics, steroid eye drops, or treatments to manage underlying conditions like rosacea. While blepharitis can be uncomfortable, it’s typically not a threat to vision once properly managed.
What make up should you wear if you have Blepharitis
If you have blepharitis, it’s crucial to select a mascara that is gentle on your eyes and won’t exacerbate the symptoms of the condition.
Generally, it’s best to look for hypoallergenic mascaras that are fragrance-free and formulated for sensitive eyes.
Additionally, you may want to consider mascaras that are oil-free, as the oil could potentially clog the Meibomian glands in your eyelids, which can worsen blepharitis.
It’s also advisable to opt for a mascara that is easy to remove. The less rubbing and scrubbing required to remove your mascara at the end of the day, the better it is for your sensitive and inflamed eyelids.
Waterproof mascaras, while excellent for longevity, can be tough to remove and could lead to further irritation. Instead, consider using a water-soluble mascara that can be removed gently with warm water and a mild, hypoallergenic cleanser. Finally, remember to replace your mascara frequently – ideally every three months – to minimise the risk of bacterial contamination.
