Three steps skincare routine for sensitive skin: Cleanse, Soothe, Moisturise.
In today’s episode, let’s talk about Soothe the skin. A few ingredients to soothe the skin: probiotics, prebiotics, fermented stuff.
When people consume probiotics, they’re consuming friendly bacteria and provides benefit for people with eczema.
Prebiotics is indigestible fibre such as FOS and GOS.
It provides energy for some of the bacteria in your gut.

Murad is founded by Dr. Murad, a skin specialist.
His recent products contain caffeine and prebiotics.
Caffeine was a popular ingredient. It was touted as being able to make your skin more plump, more hydrated, look a bit more fresh. We need experiments to prove it. However, what we do know from older research: caffeine was even used as treatment for eczema. Apparently it could reduce the inflammation

Murad Prebiotic 3-in-1 MultiMist contains niacinamide , a type of Vitamin B. Glycerin is a type of moisturiser. Key ingredients are caffeine and prebiotics such as xylitol.

Let’s fly to Japan. Kampai, cheers, have a sake.
Sake workers their hands were smooth.
Japanese skincare company SK-II tried to find out the secret to this and incorporate it in their skincare products.

Kbeauty Korean skincare routine is quite popular nowadays.
Here I have two masks which contain galactomyces ferment filtrate. Over in Japan, they ferment rice wine sake.
Any time you ferment a carbohydrate such a rice, you get alcohol and certain bacteria such as lactobacillus. Fermentation also requires using yeast or fungus such as Galactomyces or Aspergillus. No skincare company would tell you what species they are using.

An experiment was done using SK-II. It could fight against some irritating substances,. However, it was an in vitro study, conducted in a test tube or plate of cells. What works in a plate of cells might not work perfectly in a live human. Further in vitro studies suggest that GFF could decrease skin pigmentation, and therefore this might have application in terms of skin brightening or whitening.

Filter the sake, then whatever liquid is left over is a ferment filtrate.
When you use Aspergillus for fermentation, the byproduct is kojic acid. Experiments show that kojic acid can delay the browning in fruits. It can also decrease skin pigmentation

Is kojic acid the secret sauce inside SK-II?
I have no idea. But I do know that kojic acid is used inside Hada Labo and other brands. Let me unbox Hada Labo Kouji Treatment Essence.
Ingredients include water, glycerin which is a moisturiser, rice ferment filtrate (sake). So which is better. SK-II, Missha Time Revolution Essence Rx or Hada Labo? Are they exactly the same?
Which is more gentle? I don’t know, buy whatever you can afford and test it out.
