What is Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a common, chronic and usually prominent patchy skin disorder that is often extremely itchy and flaky. These patches are commonly referred to in medical circles as plaque.

Unfortunately even regular moisturizing has little effect on eliminating or relieving it.

It may disappear from time to time however the predisposition will remain so fare-ups will often occur.

The condition is normally believed by the medical fraternity to being genetic in origin. This being so, it is considered to be, like some other skin conditions, an inherited genetic disorder.

Trauma, skin injury, stress, strep throat, hormones, excessive alcohol consumption and certain medications can trigger the onset of a psoriasis outbreak.

It is important therefore to try and identify the triggers that cause an outbreak and control or eliminate them if at all possible.

What happens with psoriasis is they’re really thick scaly types of patches that form often times on the elbows, on the hands in fact many areas.

We don’t know why it focuses on those areas but it tends to do that. What happens is as the new cells kind of pile up so fast that it doesn’t even allow enough time for the old cells to be gone to be fluffed off so cellular replication proliferation can be ten times even up to a thousand times greater than normal.

If you cut yourself and the wound heals those cells will replicate ten to a thousand times quicker so you end up with these big thick patchy places and itching because the body is trying to get rid of that excessive amount of skin.

There’s also another form in which blisters appear on the palms of the hands or the soles of the feet.

If a person has psoriasis about a 50% chance that someone, grandparent or a parent also had psoriasis so it may have to do with how the liver processes fats or how the body breaks down proteins.

If you can’t break down and digest proteins well that also contributes to toxicity and psoriasis issues. Having low amounts, or inadequate amounts of good fats in your diet or too much fats that are inflammatory producing, like meat fats french fry fats trans fats.

Whereas things like fish, almonds, walnuts, pecans, flax oil, borscht, all those kinds of things are essential fatty acids.

The government tells us we need about 20 to 25 grams so that would be 4 to 5 teaspoons a day of good fats and I know very few people who are getting that in their diet right now.

We have other discussions about what these fatty acids do but this is one of the major contributing factors to psoriasis.

Also there are certain medications, certain high blood pressure medications, blood thinners things like that, that can contribute to psoriasis as well.

DHEA, the lack of progesterone, estrogen metabolites being excessive all these types of things can also contribute to the body being inflamed and contribute to psoriasis.

Psoriasis is best treated by eliminating toxins to the bowel and the urinary tract. That means you need to eat a diet high in fiber, fruits and vegetables and some grains but you need your five to six servings of fruits and vegetables per day in order to have healthy elimination.

Getting your proteins from fish and plant source proteins, your beans, your tofu’s your fish, those types of things you don’t want a lot of milk or those types which are called saturated fatty acids when you suffer from psoriasis.

I’m an athlete whenever we talk about anything as far as detoxification through the bowel and urinary system that means drinking a glass of water every couple of hours.

Make sure you drink in two of those 32 ounces a day of water. I’m not saying juice I’m saying water because remember juice contains lots of sugar. So we prefer juice, dilute it.

Avoid junk foods and alcohol. The liver has to go all the time and it makes you kind of acidic as well and so you’re going to have more of an issue with inflammation as well so you got to get rid of the junk food and you got to get rid of the alcohol.
