How to manage milk allergies in babies: GP advice

If you are a parent of a baby with a milk allergy, this video provides guidance from a GP on how to manage the allergy.

The video is a conversation between GP, Dr.Helen, and an Simon from Anaphylaxis UK about managing milk allergies in babies and children. Dr.Helen explains the differences between immediate IGE allergies and non-IGE allergies, the latter of which is more common and can cause symptoms such as reflux, loose stools, congestion, and eczema. She discusses how to manage these allergies depending on whether the baby is breastfed or formula-fed.

For breastfed babies, the mother needs to remove all cow’s milk products from her diet, and for formula-fed babies, there are two types of prescription formula milks available: extensively hydrolysed formula or amino acid formula. Dr.Helen explains the differences between these formula milks and when they should be used. She also discusses how babies can outgrow their milk allergy gradually over time and the process of reintroducing milk after avoiding it for a period of time.

The video provides useful information for parents or caregivers who may have concerns about milk allergies in infants and young children.
