What are the best ways to stop the painful attack phase of a migraine?
1. Lie down in a dark and quiet room to prevent sensory overstimulation.
2. Drink ginger tea or take a powdered ginger supplement for its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects.
3. Take migraine headache medication the moment you sense a migraine coming on.
Migraines affect approximately 20% of women and 7% of men here in the UK and are usually characterised by a severe headache that can be debilitating. Other migraine symptoms include nausea, vomiting and hallucinating. Some people may experience what is known as a migraine aura, one of the early stages of a migraine occurring before the painful “attack” phase, where it’s common to get hallucinations either visually like spots of light, or auditory such as hearing music or footsteps. During a migraine aura, you may experience an ocular migraine (causing temporary blindness in one eye), a hemiplegic migraine (characterised by weakness on one side of the body) or a vestibular migraine (causing repeated dizziness).
Whilst exact migraine causes are still being figured out, there are a number of common migraine triggers that sufferers share, although what sets off your migraine will be to some extent unique to you. Some women experience migraines around the time of their period, so changes in hormones like oestrogen may trigger migraines. Additionally, there are emotional triggers like stress, anxiety and depression, and physical triggers like tiredness, poor posture and low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia).
In terms of how to get rid of a migraine, clinically proven migraine medication in the form of migraine tablets can prevent the attack phase from being painful if taken early enough, but can also relieve the pain mid-headache.
Sumatriptan is one of the most popular prescription migraine relief treatments, also appearing in the brands Migraitan and Imigran. Whilst not preventing future migraines, it’s effective at relieving headaches, pains and other symptoms like nausea and vomiting. A 5-HT1 serotonin agonist, also known as a triptan, the active ingredient works by narrowing the blood vessels in the head to inhibit the pain of a headache and other associated symptoms. Sumatriptan usually comes in tablet form, but Imigran also produces a nasal spray option. Zolmitriptan (including the branded version Zomig) is another triptan with similar effects, although this treatment is considered more effective with greater pain-relief longevity over 24 hours. Rizatriptan (including the branded version Maxalt) is the triptan with the fastest onset, and lasts up to 3 hours on one dose. Additionally, over the counter pain relief like Solpadeine and Nurofen Migraine are tailored to migraine headaches, whilst standard ibuprofen, aspirin and paracetamol may be useful too.
