India which is a very tropical country which likes to use a lot of coconut oil on the scalp because that’s what grandmother told us. Very common condition is scalp folliculitis or scalp acne. Let me explain to you we are discussing about boils on the scalp. This is a very common condition because we have a hot country and we often wear helmets hats or occlusive head wear like a turban or a burka or a parda which increases the sweating in the scalp. The scalp has its own oil glands and if you are not going to practice adequate scalp hygiene keep reapplying some oil on the scalp and exercise as well and sweat as well the amount of bacterial buildup in the follicles or the hair follicles results in the formation of scalp acne scalp. Acne can be mild or it can be so severe that the person cannot sleep because they cannot put the head on the pillow. So first things first improve the scalp hygiene wash the hair frequently avoid putting any hair oil on it avoid any occlusive scalp garments like turbans like caps or helmets. Very often and keep the hair length to a short length. If that is possible using a ketoconazole based shampoo or a betadine based shampoo will reduce the scalp bacterial load and it will help the scalp to get better faster. In some severe cases we may have to prescribe oral antibiotics. So if your scalp is not improving with the ketoconazole based shampoo which you use frequently I think it is time to seek the help of a dermatologist.
